Wolfsburg, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Wolfsburg have extended the contract of defender Marcel Schafer until 2017, it was announced Thursday.

The 29-year-old, Wolfsburg's longest-serving current player, penned a three- year contract extension to affirm his commitment to the club he joined in 2007. The extension also includes an option to assume another role at the club should he choose to retire at the end of the contract.

"Everybody knows how much Wolfsburg and the fans, as well as the city, means to me and I'm very happy here with my family," Schafer said in a statement. "I am glad they have given me the chance to be able to play my part in their success over the long term.

"I'm really happy playing for this club and have a lot in mind over the coming three years."
