St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Rams are going to release cornerback Cortland Finnegan.
According to the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday, both head coach Jeff Fisher and team executive VP Kevin Demoff contacted Finnegan and told him that the move will be made.
Finnegan, for his part, released the following statement on his Twitter account: "St.Louis thank you for your letting me play for a classy franchise and coach fish nothing but love thank you all."
According to the paper, releasing the former Tennessee Titan will save the Rams $4 million in cap money for the upcoming season. Finnegan was due $6 million in base salary plus a $3 million signing bonus due by March 13, and would have counted $10 million against the salary cap, the paper revealed.
The Samford product, who signed a deal with St. Louis for five years at approximately $50 million in March of 2012, recorded only 27 tackles and one interception in seven games (five starts) last year. He picked up 101 tackles, three picks and one sack in 16 games two seasons ago in his first campaign with the Rams.
