Madrid, Spain – The legendary all-white strip of Real Madrid has dominated the Spanish league this season, and Jose Mourinho's men will look to prolong that trend on Sunday when it welcomes Espanyol to the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid is in the midst of a stunning run in La Liga that has seen the club take 64 points from its first 24 games for the first time in its storied history. Los Blancos are currently on a nine-game winning streak in league play, bringing Real to a 10-point lead over second-place Barcelona.
Cristiano Ronaldo is setting La Liga afire on the scoring charts, leading the way with 29 goals on the season. His strike rate in Spain this season is tops as the Portuguese star averages 1.09 goals per game. Barcelona's Lionel Messi is second on that list with a rate of 0.73 goals per game.
But Ronaldo is not necessarily carrying the entire workload for Real Madrid. The team, as a whole, has notched 80 league goals this season and has managed to score in 20 consecutive matches.
Throw in a defense that has conceded just 21 goals through 24 league games and the result is a sensationally dominant campaign this season, even by Real Madrid's standards.
The club will put its impressive run on the line against an Espanyol side that has hit a rough patch of late. The Parakeets have failed to pick up a win in their last four league matches, getting just two points in that spell.
Real is coming off of a 1-0 win at Rayo Vallecano that saw Ronaldo grab a second-half winner with an audacious backheel shot from 10 yards out.
Barcelona, in second place on 54 points, will have the opportunity to move to within seven points of Real Madrid for at least 24 hours. The Catalans hit Camp Nou on Saturday when they host Sporting Gijon, which is second from bottom on 21 points.
Sevilla and Atletico Madrid will face off in a massive fixture at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan as the two clubs are tied on 32 points with a European spot in sight. Sevilla has won two straight while Atletico is winless in its last four.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Getafe hosts Malaga at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, Mallorca welcomes Osasuna to the Estadio Son Moix, and Racing heads to the Teresa Rivero to face Rayo Vallecano.
Sunday's La Liga action sees third-place Valencia heading to Los Carmenes to face Granada, Athletic Bilbao hosting Real Sociedad at the San Mames, and last-place Real Zaragoza hoping to inch closer to safety when it welcomes Villarreal to the Estadio La Romareda.
League action rounds out on Monday when Levante, sitting in fourth place on 35 points, returns home to face a Real Betis team that is unbeaten in its last three La Liga contests.
