Halle, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Third seed Milos Raonic was a stunning loser, while fourth seed Kei Nishikori needed three sets to win his second- round match Wednesday at the grass-court Gerry Weber Open, a Wimbledon tune- up.
German wild card Peter Gojowczyk, ranked 120th in the world, ousted the Canadian slugger Raonic 6-4, 6-4, while the Japanese world No. 12 Nishikori outlasted former top-10 performer Gael Monfils, of France, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, at Gerry Weber Stadium. Gojowczyk broke Raonic twice on Wednesday, while the Canadian was unable to break his German counterpart in the upset.
Also in the round of 16, Colombian Alejandro Falla dropped Dutchman Robin Haase 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 and German favorite and 2011 champion and 2008 runner-up Philipp Kohlschreiber dismissed French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2, 6-4. Falla will meet Gojowczyk in Friday's quarterfinals.
In some more second-round action on Thursday, top-seeded superstars Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will take to the courts. Fresh off his ninth French Open title, the world No. 1 Nadal will meet German Dustin Brown, while the former top-ranked great and six-time Halle titlist Federer will take on Portuguese Joao Sousa.
Federer beat Russian Mikhail Youzhny in last year's Gerry Weber finale.
