Americans Sam Querrey and Ryan Harrison round winners at the $4.695 million BNP Paribas Masters, the first ATP World Tour Masters event of the year.

Querrey got past fellow countryman Tim Smyczek 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 while Harrison made short work of Flavio Cipolla, beating the Italian 6-1, 6-2 on the hardcourts at the beautiful Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Oft-injured American wild card Robby Ginepri fought back to reach the second round with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Italian qualifier Paolo Lorenzi, while another American wild card, Jack Sock, was dismissed by Colombian Santiago Giraldo in 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 fashion.

Other Day-1 winners were Poland's Lukasz Kubot, German Philipp Kohlschreiber, Italian Andreas Seppi, Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan, Pablo Andujar, Albert Ramos and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, Israel's Dudi Sela, Portugal's Frederico Gil, Frenchman Nicolas Mahut and Australian Matthew Ebden.

Novak Djokovic beat fellow two-time winner Rafael Nadal in last year's marquee Indian Wells finale.

This week's top seeds are Djokovic, Nadal, three-time champ Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Djokovic, Nadal and Federer have combined to win seven of the last eight Indian Wells championships.

Nadal is the all-time leader with a whopping 19 Masters titles.

The 2012 Indian Wells champion will collect $1 million.
