South African police say forensic experts working for Oscar Pistorius visited the house where he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and examined the toilet door through which the double-amputee Olympian fired the fatal shots.

In a statement Thursday responding to a list of questions from The Associated Press, the South African Police Service said American forensic specialists visited his villa in Pretoria on Monday. They say "the purpose of this visit was to enable them to have access to the toilet door and reconstruct the crime scene."

Police said it was the second time investigators for Pistorius had examined the scene in the presence of the police team.

Pistorius is preparing his defense before standing trial in March on a premeditated murder charge in Steenkamp's killing.
