Omaha, NE – Michael Phelps rallied to win the men's 100-meter butterfly Sunday at the U.S. Olympic trails.
Phelps made the turn in sixth place, but he caught Tyler McGill and touched in at 51.14 seconds. McGill held on to secure the second Olympic spot in 51.32. Ryan Lochte, Phelps' rival, was third.
Phelps won an Olympic-record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games. He is now scheduled to swim the same events in London: the 100-and 200-meter butterfly, the 200-and 400-meter individual medley and the 200-meter freestyle in addition to all three relays.
Cullen Jones won the men's 50-meter freestyle, surging to the wall one- hundredth of a second ahead of Anthony Ervin.
Also on Sunday, Missy Franklin locked up her fourth individual event by winning the women's 200-meter backstroke in two minutes, 6.12 seconds. Franklin finished 1.46 ahead of Elizabeth Beisel, who also is bound for London.
In the women's 800-meter freestyle, Kathleen Ledecky posted a time of eight minutes, 19.78, a little over two seconds ahead of runner-up Kate Ziegler.
Forty-five-year-old Dara Torres, owner of 12 Olympic medals, qualified for the final of the women's 50-meter freestyle.
