Padres crush Bumgarner, Giants

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres made mincemeat of the World Series MVP and cruised to a 10-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Madison Bumgarner (1-1) was knocked around for five runs over the first three innings, and the Padres finished with 20 hits in a stark contrast from the 1-0 contests split by these NL West rivals to start the series.

"We were patient and aggressive at the same time," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We were ready to hit."

James Shields (1-0), who was on the losing end in two of Bumgarner's gems in last year's Fall Classic, tossed seven solid innings to pick up his first win of the season. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed only three hits -- one being Joaquin Arias' leadoff homer in the fourth.

San Diego's offense provided plenty of support. Matt Kemp registered four hits, Will Middlebrooks added three with two RBI, and Wil Myers and Justin Upton both totaled two hits, two runs scored and two driven in.

Kemp started a two-out rally in the first inning with a flare that caught a piece of the left-field line. Upton followed the double with an RBI single and later scored on Middlebrooks' base hit through the left side.

The Padres tacked on three more runs in the third on the strength of five singles. Derek Norris, Middlebrooks and Jedd Gyorko hit consecutive run- scoring base hits to make it a 5-0 game.

Bumgarner did not make it out of the dugout in the fourth having allowed 10 hits -- one more than he surrendered in his 21 otherworldly innings in the 2014 World Series.

"I was a little off," Bumgarner said. "I was battling to put pitches where I wanted to and wasn't very effective."

Ryan Vogelsong took over and threw two scoreless innings before the Padres' bats woke up again in the sixth. An error and a single by Shields put runners on the corners, and Myers and Kemp both singled in runs. Upton capped the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Myers doubled in Will Venable and scored on a Yangervis Solarte single in the seventh, and Justin Maxwell knocked in Norichika Aoki in the eighth to account for San Francisco's final run.

Game Notes

Casey McGehee pulled up with an apparent injury after hitting a fly ball in the first inning and was replaced by Arias at third base in the bottom half ... The Giants have scored two runs or fewer in nine of their last 12 games at Petco Park ... Former Padre Jake Peavy will pitch the series finale on Sunday against Tyson Ross.
