Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Third-seeded Argentine Paula Ormaechea was a first-round winner at the inaugural Rio Open tennis event on Monday.
Ormaechea made short work of Nicole Gibbs, needing just 62 minutes to beat the American qualifier 6-2, 6-1 on the red clay at Jockey Club Brasileiro.
In another match involving a seeded player, Italian Nastassja Burnett took out No. 6 Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 7-5, 6-4.
Also on opening day, Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck handled Swede Johanna Larsson 6-4, 6-3, Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens topped Montenegro's Danka Kovinic 7-5, 6-0, Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa dismantled Brazil's Laura Pigossi 6-0, 6-1 and Poland's Katarzyna Piter defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-3.
This week's top seeds are Czech Klara Zakopalova and former French Open champ Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
