Glasgow, Scotland (SportsNetwork.com) - Scottish hero Andy Murray gave Great Britain a 1-0 lead over the United States with a victory against Donald Young in a best-of-five opening-round Davis Cup tie in Glasgow, where the hosts ended Day 1 with a commanding 2-0 lead.
The Dunblane, Scotland, native Murray needed four sets to subdue the left- handed Young, 6-1, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and the nightcap saw England's James Ward come from behind to outlast and upset big John Isner 6-7 (4-7), 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 15-13 in a just-under-five-hour war of attrition on the indoor hardcourt at Glasgow's Emirates Arena.
Isner swatted 39 aces in a losing effort in a match where there were only three breaks of serve, including two for the winner Ward.
Saturday's doubles call for the American Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, to take on a British duo of Dominic Inglot and Murray's older brother, Jamie.
Sunday's reverse singles will pit the world No. 5 Murray against the 20th- ranked 6-foot-10 Isner and the No. 47 Young versus the 111th-ranked Ward.
The two-time Grand Slam champion and 2014 Australian Open runner-up Murray is now 20-2 in his career Davis Cup singles.
Team USA is captained by former world No. 1 Jim Courier, while Leon Smith pilots Britain.
This tie marks a repeat of last year's first-round clash in San Diego, where the Murray-led Brits beat the U.S., 3-1.
The U.S. leads this all-time series, 11-8. The Americans own a record 32 Davis Cup titles, while Britain boasts nine, with its' last one coming in 1936. The Americans last hoisted the chalice in 2007.
The Americans and Britain squared off in the first-ever Davis Cup meeting in 1900.
The winner in Glasgow will meet the France-Germany victor in a quarterfinal in July.
