Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado were named American League co-players of the week for the period ending August 12.

Gonzalez hit .393 with seven doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI en route to his second weekly honor of the season and seventh of his career. Gonzalez led American League hitters in doubles and RBI.

Machado made his major league debut on August 9 and went on to hit .375 with three home runs, a double, a triple and seven RBI in 16 at-bats. The 20-year- old picked up an extra-base hit in each of his first four career games.

Yankees infielder Eric Chavez, Angels pitcher Jered Weaver, Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and White Sox pitcher Chris Sale were also considered for the award.
