Longtime University of Washington football coach Don James has died.

James, who had pancreatic cancer, died at home Sunday morning surrounded by family, the school said. He was 80.

In 18 seasons at Washington from 1975-1992, James had a record of 153-58-2, winning six conference titles and a share of the 1991 national championship with Miami.

James also coached Kent State and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

Current Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian said in a statement he and his family were sad to hear of James' death and said his accomplishments as a coach "stand alone."

"But what made him truly special is the quality of man he was away from the game," said Sarkisian. "The guidance and leadership he instilled into this program and community are still felt today, and will continue to be felt here for a long, long time."

James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol; three children and 10 grandchildren, according to the school.
