Barcelona, Spain – American teenager Katie Ledecky set a world record in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle to highlight the third day of the 2013 World Swimming Championships.
The 16-year-old touched the wall in a time of 15 minutes 36.53 seconds to smash the previous record of 15:42.54 set by compatriot Kate Ziegler in 2007.
American Missy Franklin won gold in the women's 100-meter backstroke, an event she won at last year's Olympics. The 18-year-old finished with a time of 58.42 seconds.
Lithuanian teenager Ruta Meilutyte won the women's 100-metre breaststroke gold. The 16-year-old touched in a time of 1 minute, 04.42 seconds, seven hundredths slower than the world-record pace of 1:04.35 she set Monday. Meilutyte was the gold medal winner at this event in the 2012 London Olympics.
Yannick Agnel of France claimed gold in the men's 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:44.20. American Matthew Grevers took home gold in the men's 100- meter backstroke with a time of 52.93 seconds.
