Indian Wells, CA – Former champion Ana Ivanovic posted a quarterfinal upset victory Thursday at the $5.535 million BNP Paribas Open.
The 15th-seeded Ivanovic knocked out seventh-seeded Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour, 17 minutes at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The former world No. 1 Ivanovic broke Bartoli three times, while the French loser settled for only one break on Day 9.
The 24-year-old former French Open champion Ivanovic, of Serbia, was the Indian Wells titlist in 2008 and runner-up in 2009.
Ivanovic will meet the Maria Sharapova-Maria Kirilenko winner in Friday's semifinals. The former world No. 1 Sharapova, the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon runner-up, titled here in the California desert back in 2006.
The other semi will pit world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka against 18th-seeded German Angelique Kerber. The Aussie Open champion Azarenka has yet to lose this year, at 21-0.
The 2012 Indian Wells titlist will collect $1 million.
