Hernandez instrumental in United comeback at Villa

Birmingham, England – It is written in Manchester United's DNA.

The storied club has a penchant for late comebacks, and the Red Devils exhibited yet another dramatic finish on Saturday as they stormed back from two-nil down to earn a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Andreas Weimann scored on either side of halftime to hand Villa a two-goal advantage, but Javier Hernandez proved that no lead against United is safe. Chicharito had a hand in all three goals, scoring two and forcing an own goal from Ron Vlaar, to help the Red Devils open up a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Manchester Untied dictated play in the opening 45 minutes only for Aston Villa to open the scoring in first-half stoppage time.

Christian Benteke wriggled free of Chris Smalling on the left touchline and picked out Weimann at the top of the box. The 21-year-old fired a one-time shot through traffic that beat David De Gea's outstretched arm.

Weimann doubled Villa's lead less than five minutes into the second half when he eased past Rio Ferdinand to slam home a low cross from Gabriel Agbonlahor.

United stormed back through Chicharito with two goals in the span of five minutes.

The Mexican striker latched on to a long ball in the 58th minute and slipped a shot through the legs of Brad Guzan after a fortuitous bounce.

Hernandez helped bring United level in the 63rd minute, getting on the end of Rafael's cross to the back post and guiding a one-time effort that took a deflection off of Vlaar on its way into the back of the net.

Weimann nearly restored Villa's lead at the 65-minute mark, but his powerful header was placed directly at De Gea and the Spaniard parried the ball to safety.

At the other end, Robin van Persie came within inches of giving United its first lead of the match. He struck the crossbar twice in the span of one minute, powering a header off the frame from Wayne Rooney's corner kick in the 72nd minute before a shot from distance shortly after rattled the woodwork.

United's dramatic comeback was complete four minutes from full time when Hernandez eluded his mark and nodded a set piece delivery past Guzan and into the side netting.

The Red Devils lead the Premier League with 27 points, 15 of which have come from matches in which they have trailed. The club has won five straight in league play.

Aston Villa remains fourth from bottom in the table, sitting just three points clear of the relegation zone with nine points through 11 games.

Arsenal 3, Fulham 3

London, England - Arsenal threw away a golden opportunity to claim three points against a London rival on Saturday, settling for a home point in a 3-3 draw with Fulham at the Emirates.

Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski handed the Gunners a two-goal advantage by the 23-minute mark, but Dimitar Berbatov and Alexander Kacaniklic helped the visiting Cottagers draw level before halftime.

Fulham went in front thanks to Berbatov's penalty kick in the 67th minute, but Giroud restored the even score two minutes later.

Arsenal was awarded a penalty kick in the final minute of stoppage time, but Mikel Arteta's ensuing attempt was denied by Mark Schwarzer.

The two sides remain deadlocked in the table, improving to 16 points apiece.

Everton 2, Sunderland 1

Liverpool, England - Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic scored three minutes apart to overturn a one-goal deficit and lead Everton to a 2-1 defeat of Sunderland at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Adam Johnson gave the Black Cats the lead just before halftime, but Fellaini and Jelavic scored to ensure that Everton's unbeaten run in league play would be extended eight games.

The Toffees remain fourth in England's top flight by improving to 20 points, while Sunderland's second straight defeat leaves the club three points clear of the drop zone with nine points.

Southampton 1, Swansea City 1

Southampton, England - Southampton and Swansea City exchanged goals nine minutes apart as the two sides played to a 1-1 draw at St. Mary's on Saturday.

Morgan Schneiderlin gave the home side the lead in the 64th minute, but Nathan Dyer earned visiting Swansea a point with his equalizer in the 73rd minute.

Swansea has drawn two straight to improve to 13 points, while Southampton snaps a three-game losing skid to rise out of the Premier League cellar with five points through 11 games.

Stoke City 1, QPR 0

Stoke-on-Trent, England - QPR is still searching for its first league win of the season after Charlie Adam handed Stoke City a 1-0 victory at the Britannia on Saturday.

The midfielder bagged his first goal for his new club, scoring seven minutes after halftime to see the Potters improve to 12 points.

QPR drops to last place with just four points collected through 11 matches.

West Bromwich 2, Wigan 1

Wigan, England - West Bromwich claimed a second successive Premier League win on Saturday, brushing Wigan aside 2-1 at the DW Stadium to keep pace with Everton.

James Morrison opened the scoring at the half-hour mark before an own goal from Gary Caldwell made matters worse for Wigan. Arouna Kone answered with his fourth goal of the season, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal.

The Baggies stay level with the Toffees on 20 points apiece while the Latics see their two-game winning run come to an end.

Reading 0, Norwich City 0

Reading, England - Reading was denied a first Premier League victory of the season after being held to a 0-0 home draw by Norwich City on Saturday.

Reading remains in the relegation zone after its third straight draw, while Norwich sees its unbeaten run extended to four Premier League games.
