Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Spaniard David Ferrer, Czech Tomas Berdych and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka highlighted the early wave of winners on the first day of the Australian Open.
The third-seeded Ferrer breezed past Grand Slam debutant Alejandro Gonzalez, advancing in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena. Ferrer lost to three-time reigning champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals at Melbourne Park last year.
Berdych, who is the seventh seed, posted a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over Kazakhstan's Aleksandr Nedovyesov. The Australian Open is the lone major Berdych has yet to reach the semifinals.
The eighth-seeded Wawrinka won the opening set 6-4 and was leading 4-1 in the second when Andrey Golubev retired.
Frenchman Richard Gasquet, Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Croat Ivan Dodig were among the other seeded winners Monday.
The ninth-seeded Gasquet bested countryman David Guez 7-5, 6-4, 6-1, the 14th- seeded Youzhny dropped only seven games in a straight-set triumph over German Jan-Lennard Struff and the 32nd-seeded Dodig prevailed against compatriot Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Other winners included Austria's Dominic Thiem, Finn Jarkko Nieminen, American Sam Querrey, Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia's Alejandro Falla, Frenchman Adrian Mannarino and German Florian Mayer.
