Alante Fenner scored 15 points and Terel Hall had 14 as fifth-seeded Savannah State beat 12th seed South Carolina State 64-47 on Monday in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Jeremiah Hill added 10 points for Savannah State (11-6), while Jyles Smith had eight points, five assists and 13 rebounds.

Savannah State led 28-24 at halftime and was up by just five with 7 minutes left. Then the Tigers made eight free throws during a 10-0 run to lead 50-35 with 2:56 left.

South Carolina State (9-21) was led by Jalen White with 19 points and Matthew Hezekiah grabbed 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs hit just 14 of 53 shots (26.4 percent), made 15 of 25 free throws and were outrebounded 45-36.

Savannah State will play No. 4 Norfolk State on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
