Montreal, QC – Top-seeded Novak Djokovic and American Mardy Fish posted quarterfinal victories Friday at the $2.43 million Rogers Cup, an ATP Masters and U.S. Open Series event.
The world No. 1 Djokovic improved to 53-1 in his last 54 matches, including 51-1 this season, by downing fifth-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils, 6-2, 6-1. The Serb is a perfect 26-0 on hardcourts this year.
Djokovic, who captured this Canadian Masters tournament in Montreal back in 2007, secured his first Wimbledon title last month and has already won eight titles on the ATP circuit this season.
Next in line for Djokovic is another Frenchman in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a 6-4, 6-4 winner against No. 8 seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain. Tsonga upset Roger Federer to reach the quarters.
Despite dropping serve five times in the first two sets, the sixth-seeded world No. 8 Fish held off 14th-seeded Swiss slugger Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 6-0 in 2 hours, 21 minutes on the hardcourts at Uniprix Stadium.
The Wimbledon quarterfinalist Fish is seeking a trip into a third final this year. He titled in Atlanta last month.
Fish will meet gritty Serbian Janko Tipsarevic in Saturday's semifinals. The unseeded 24th-ranked Tipsarevic upended seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4. Tipsarevic, who popped 10 aces in the 1-hour, 28-minute upset, will now appear in his fifth semifinal (2-2) of the year.
The 2011 Rogers Cup titlist will pocket $450,000.
