UP IN THE AIR — The weather forecast for today’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway remains questionable. Showers are expected to begin sometime between 1 and 2 p.m. CT. With a green flag time of about 12:19 p.m., that means there’s a strong chance the race could get to halfway before precipitation becomes an issue. We’ll see.
Qualifying was rained out yesterday, so the field was set by speeds from the first practice on Friday. That put Carl Edwards on pole, flanked by Martin Truex Jr. Marcos Ambrose and Joey Logano are on Row 2, with Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth filling out Row 3.
Denny Hamlin, in the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota for the first time since his crash at Auto Club Speedway, starts seventh. He is expected to race until the first caution and then turn the car over to Brian Vickers. Michael Waltrip said Saturday he will drop to the back and run with Hamlin.
