Couples withdraws from Players Championship

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL – Fred Couples has withdrawn from this weekend's The Players Championship because of an illness.

Couples, who won The Players in 1984 and 1996, also pulled out of last week's Champions Tour event because of sickness. He has not played since tying for 12th at the Masters in early April.

Couples earned a spot in The Players Championship because he won the Senior Players Championship last year. He was not replaced in the event because that berth doesn't count against the field.
