Burnley shocks City

Burnley, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Burnley pulled off one of the upsets of the season on Saturday with a 1-0 home victory against Manchester City courtesy of a wonderful strike from George Boyd in the 61st minute.

City now finds itself five points back of Chelsea, which has two games in hand, while Manuel Pellegrini's outfit is just one point clear of third-place Arsenal.

As disappointing as Saturday's result is for City, Burnley will be delighted at having captured three unlikely points to close to within one point of safety.

City's attack was surprisingly ineffective against a Burnley side with the second worst defensive record in the Premier League, and the most that Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton had to do in the first half was keep out a low drive from Edin Dzeko.

The second half was played at a better pace and Sergio Aguero came close for City when he connected with a ball from Pablo Zabaleta.

Boyd went close with a volley shortly after for the hosts, but they snatched the lead just after the hour mark when Kieran Trippier's free kick was headed only as far as Boyd at the edge of the area, allowing him to send a scorching left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net.

City continued to struggle to break down Burnley, and Aguero headed just over from Yaya Toure's cross before a late penalty appeal was turned down.

Zabaleta darted into the penalty area in injury time and went down under a challenge from Burnley's Ben Mee, appearing to win a spot kick for his side. However, referee Andre Marriner wasn't interested and the hosts held on for a famous victory.

Arsenal took advantage of City's stumble to close the gap on the defending champions to only one point following a 3-0 win over West Ham.

Olivier Giroud fired the Gunners in front just before halftime, and goals from Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini in the final 10 minutes closed out the match.

Aston Villa claimed a huge 4-0 win at Sunderland with all four goals coming in the first half. Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor scored two goals apiece for Villa, while Sunderland resides just one point above the relegation places.

Crystal Palace scored three times in the opening half of a 3-1 victory over second-from-the-bottom QPR, Brown Ideye's goal in the 20th minute was the difference as West Bromwich topped Stoke City, 1-0, while last-place Leicester City finished in a 0-0 draw with Hull City.
