Spartanburg, SC – Wofford senior fullback Eric Breitenstein repeated as Southern Conference offensive player of the year and Appalachian State linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough and Chattanooga defensive lineman Davis Tull shared defensive player of the year honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
Breitenstein became the fourth player in SoCon history to win offensive player of the year awards in back-to-back seasons. The FCS' active career rushing leader with 5,348 yards and 62 touchdowns, he has gone over the 100-yard rushing mark in all but one game this year. He has scored 16 touchdowns and averaged 150 yards in 11 games. In a win at Elon on Sept. 29, the senior set a new SoCon record with 321 rushing yards.
Kimbrough finished the regular season leading the conference in tackles with 128 - 64 of which were solo - and he added nine tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and had two games this season with at least 15 tackles. Kimbrough became the first ASU player to win defensive player of the year honors since 2008.
Wofford and Appalachian State will continue their seasons in the FCS playoffs.
Tull finished his terrific sophomore season with a conference-leading 12.5 sacks, which ranks third in the FCS. He also finished first in the SoCon in tackles for loss with 18.5, forced three fumbles and had 56 tackles.
Appalachian State receiver Sean Price picked up freshman of the year honors, while The Citadel's Mike Sellers took home the "Jacobs Blocking Award" as the SoCon's offensive lineman of the year. His coach, Kevin Higgins, and Samford coach Pat Sullivan shared coach of the year honors.
Appalachian State finished with five first-team selections and seven second- team selections. Both totals were highs in the conference.
