Munich, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Bayern Munich was held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday but still managed to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals with a two-goal aggregate win.
The reigning European champions earned a 2-0 victory in the opening leg at the Emirates a fortnight ago, a scoreline that sees the German side through after Arsenal put up a valiant effort in the return match.
Bastian Schweinsteiger appeared to put the tie to bed in the 53rd minute when he slotted home a low cross from Franck Ribery, but Arsenal managed to equalize just four minutes later.
Lukas Podolski muscled Philipp Lahm out of a challenge in the 57th minute and while the Bavarians awaited a whistled, the Arsenal striker drifted inside and lashed the tying goal past Manuel Neuer at the near post.
Bayern was awarded a late penalty when Arjen Robben was tripped up by Laurent Koscielny in stoppage time, but Thomas Muller saw his ensuing attempt rebuffed by Lukasz Fabianski.
It would have been a critical stop from Fabianski in any other situation, but Bayern was able to close out the match with such little time left on the clock.
Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, cruised to the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday, getting a 4-1 win at the Calderon to bounce AC Milan from the competition by a 5-1 aggregate score.
After taking a 1-0 win from the first leg, Atletico extended the lead in just the third minute of the return match when Diego Costa got on the end of a cross to the back post and poked a shot past Christian Abbiati.
Kaka pulled one back for Milan with a 26th-minute header that took a deflection on its way past Thibaut Courtois, but Atletico restored the lead with six minutes remaining in the opening period when Arda Turan looped a shot over Abbiati from distance.
Atletico pulled away from the Italian side in the second period as goals from Raul Garcia and Costa put the win beyond any doubt.
