The Oakland Athletics placed pitcher Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, retroactive to June 20, with a strained right shoulder.

McCarthy landed on the DL May 18-June 1 with the same injury, but was stellar in his return, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.35 earned run average in three outings. In 12 starts this season McCarthy is 6-3 with a 2.54 ERA.

The A's also optioned utility infielder Eric Sogard to Triple-A Sacramento.

Sogard hit .145 with two homers and six RBI over 22 games this season.

To fill the roster spots, Oakland recalled pitcher Evan Scribner and selected pitcher A.J. Griffin from Sacramento.

Scribner went 3-0 with a 3.03 earned run average and eight saves over 26 games in the minors this season. He appeared in two games with Oakland earlier this season, posting five strikeouts and one save without allowing a run in 4 1/3 innings.

Griffin went 3-2 with a 2.81 ERA and 40 strikeouts in eight starts in Triple- A this season. He also posted a 3-1 record with 44 strikeouts over seven starts with Double-A Midland.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, Oakland designated Danny Farquhar for assignment.
