Hot Houses: Julia Roberts' Hawaiian hotspot and private island off Cape Cod

Each week picks its Top 3 over-the-top luxury listings from Mansion Global.

This week we have Julia Roberts’ Hawaiian getaway, a fashionable Manhattan monastery turned into a luxury townhouse and a private island off of Cape Cod.

Pretty woman Julia Roberts has just dropped the price of her luxurious yet rustic Hawaiian beachfront estate to $19.5 million, down from $29.85 million.

The gorgeous two-acre property, a true hideaway to get away from it all and enjoy the pleasures of paradise, is in the exclusive Hanalei area on Kauai’s North Shore.

The 3,792-square-foot property—which has 213-foot of beach frontage—has seven bedrooms and four bathrooms. The new owner may obtain permits to build up to 9,000-square-foot additional structures or a pool.

Prior to Roberts, the property was owned by Hans Peter Faye, a prominent Kauai sugar plantation manager.

There’s nothing ascetic about this New York monastery turned into modern townhouse. There’s hardly any evidence left that this was once a dwelling where monks lived and prayed while tending to their flock in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in Manhattan.

“I wanted it to be like 'Alice in Wonderland'—normal from the outside, not so normal on the inside,” says owner Matthew Hansen of his renovation plans when he purchased this West 51st Street townhouse.

The stripped-down, brand new interior of the home is an homage to modern luxury, completely disrobed of the overly ornate pre-war vibe seen in many older New York townhouses.

The six-floor townhouse has six bedrooms, five full and three partial bathrooms, and clocks in at a whopping 7,003 square feet.

There’s way more outdoor space than the typical Manhattan property, with a Juliet balcony off the master suite, a second terrace, and a private backyard. The double-height living room ceilings on the parlor level hit 22 feet. The lower level has an entertainment center: a game room and a modern version of an “English pub.” The chef’s kitchen continues is the chic industrialist’s dream.

And it could be yours for $14 million.

For beach bums in the Northeast, an entire private island off of Cape Cod is available for the first time in several generations.

For just $12.5 million you could own this 25-acre beauty complete with nine-different sized parcels of land.

Sipson Island is right in the middle of Pleasant Bay, a world-class boating and fishing destination just minutes away from the Eastern coast of Cape Cod.

There are already several year-round and seasonal dwellings on the property. It’s home to a seven-bedroom, four bathroom main house, two boathouses and three docks.

The island is less than 90 miles from Boston and conveniently located near airports in Hyannis and Provincetown. While the island is only accessible by boat, there is convenient parking right next to the dock.  For avid golfers, the island is a quick boat ride from the five-star Wequassett Resort and Golf Club.
