The U.S. Senate vote on whether to confirm Eric Holder for attorney general has been delayed one week, giving Republicans more time to examine his qualifications.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., announced the postponement Wednesday.

Some Republicans have voiced concerns about Holder's support for former President Clinton's pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich. They also questioned his support for clemency for 16 members of a militant Puerto Rican group called the Armed Forces for National Liberation.

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who requested the delay on behalf of committee Republicans, plans to meet with Holder Thursday to discuss some of those issues.

During his confirmation hearing, Holder also declared that he believes waterboarding is torture and that some Guantanamo Bay detainees should be prosecuted in U.S. courts.
