President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi apparently reached agreement Thursday on at least one government-run option – lunch.
While the White House would not disclose the meal served to the president and the California Democrat in a private dining room, the "private option" was surprising for a president whose star power and past experiences in big cities like Chicago sparked hope among Washington's dining establishment that he would venture beyond downtown more than his recent predecessors, with the exception of President Bill Clinton.
Since taking office in January, Obama has mixed with the locals. He has dined at places from the legendary Ben's Chili Bowl to the Blue Duck Tavern, where the Obamas marked their 17th wedding anniversary, to Five Guys, a fast-food restaurant where he shared a cheeseburger with NBC's Brian Williams, to Ray's Hell Burger, where the president and Vice President Biden had lunch.
Obama has also taken his family to Alexandria, Va., to the Dairy Godmother shortly before Father's Day, and to the Majestic in July.

It's a mystery as to what Obama and Pelosi discussed, but it's a safe bet that health care reform was high on the agenda. Pelosi is pushing for a government-run "public option" to compete with private insurers. Obama has said a public option is not essential to health care reform.
Later Thursday, Obama signed into law the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act in East Room with Pelosi by his side.
