Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, on Monday introduced a resolution calling on the Obama administration to invoke a rarely used article of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to defend France and take up a more aggressive fight against the Islamic State.

Poe's language calls on Obama to invoke Article 5 of NATO, something that was done only once, after the 9/11 attacks against the United States.

"Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, signed at Washington, April 4, 1949, states that 'The Parties agree than an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all,'" his resolution reads.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Poe said that France has the right to invoke Article 5, but said the U.S. could also take that step on behalf of France.
