Former Bush White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card is seriously considering running for the late Sen. Edward Kennedy's vacant Senate seat, FOX News has confirmed.
Veteran political strategist and Card friend Ron Kaufman told the Associated Press Wednesday that Card is being pushed by Republicans to look at the race and is weighing a candidacy. Kaufman said in an e-mailed statement that Card has not made up his mind.
Card plans to speak Wednesday night to state GOP officials at a meeting in Newton, Mass, reportedly to gauge what kind of support he will have should he decide to toss his hat into what will be a very short race.
It is not known what he will talk about.
Card served in the White House under Bush, as well as Bush's father, former President George H.W. Bush. Card is a native of Holbrook, Mass.
While well known among older residents for his role in previous Republican administrations, he would have an uphill battle against any number of Democratic candidates, including state Attorney General Martha Coakley.
