WASHINGTON -- The tour guides who welcome visitors to the Capitol Visitor Center are planning to join a union.
The workers voted last week to join the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The union also represents other legislative branch workers at the Library of Congress and Architect of the Capitol.
Union spokesman Carl Goldman says 96 of the 138 tour guides and visitor assistants at the center voted to unionize. He says 33 voted against unionizing. Workers began organizing last year.
Goldman says the workers want to be taken seriously by management. Some are looking for warmer winter jackets or answers to questions regarding benefits.
Eva Malecki, a spokeswoman for the Capitol architect, says officials will discuss the next steps with the union.
