Suzanne Somers' tips for staying young

For many, the thought of aging can be scary— becoming forgetful and getting sore joints and wrinkles.

But according to Suzanne Somers, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor of, recently sat down with the actress, writer and health advocate to talk about her new book, Bombshell: Explosive Medical Secrets That Will Redefine Aging, and talk about her secrets for staying young.

Somers said she became interested in the science of aging and started interviewing doctors because she felt like aging didn’t have to be the stereotype it has been in the past.

“I’m having such a different experience than when I was a kid,” she said. “People that were over 65 either retired or died, and I am so nowhere near that.”

Alvarez asked Somers about her daily routine that keeps her looking and feeling great. She talked about the importance of getting a blood test to determine what vitamins and minerals you are deficient in, making it possible to take only the supplements you need and not ones that are unnecessary.

On top of taking designer supplements, Somers eats organic food free of artificial preservatives or chemicals.

One very important topic in Somers’ latest book is avoiding cancer. She explained that everyone has five cancer protective switches that can be activated by getting rid of toxins, eliminating processed foods, sleeping eight hours a night, managing stress and balancing hormones.

“It doesn’t cost anything really, it’s just a change in thinking. We are in control of our age, we are in control of our health,” she said.

Another significant topic Somers addressed is sex drive. In her research she found that the best way to keep up your sex drive as you age is by replacing hormones that are lost as the body gets older.

“I am trying to make aging aspirational, and I want someone young to look at me and want what I have. I am the new face of aging,” she said.
