It turns out the formula for a happy family is not the one boy and one girl combination that many couples strive for. It’s actually families with two girls that are the most harmonious, according to a study of more than 2,000 families.

With two daughters, the siblings tended to be easier to reason with, help out more around the house and actually like each other.

After two girls, one boy and one girl was rated the next best combination, followed by two boys, the study by a British parenting website Bounty.com found.

But beware, there can too much of a good thing when it comes to daughters.

Families with four girls were the least happy with family life overall.

Parents in this category reported drawbacks including squabbles and having to buy a bigger house and car.

"The findings were absolutely fascinating – we often assume little girls behave like angels, and if you have two this certainly seems to be the case.” Bounty.com spokeswoman Faye Mingo said. "But the more girls you have the more of a handful they become - more so in fact than boys."
