The Hottest Hairstyles for Summer 2014

What’s the hottest hairstyle for the steamy summer months to come? It’s a triple threat. READ: The Best Hairstyles For Women Over 40 A New York Times article recently reported that women are flocking to their stylists in search of the perfect pixie, lob, or classic bob hairstyle. In other words, the shorter, the better. Aside from looking effortlessly chic, it’s being reported women are chopping off the locks now more than ever to welcome the balmy summer months ahead. And the sudden interest in ‘90s fashion has also caused women to look at past stars from the decade for some stylish inspiration. “People are sick of having scarves tangled in their long hair,” New York City-based stylist Heather Shea told the publication. “They want to feel a fresh start. At least 25 percent of my clients have short hair right now, maybe 50 percent if you include bobs.” PHOTOS: The Lob, Hollywood's Hottest Haircut What’s the difference between the three? The bob, a jaw-length cut, first gained popularity during the ‘20s and continues to reign supreme for its ability to highlight one’s facial features. It can be styled in a variety of ways, from sleek to bouncy or wavy. The lob, a longer version of the bob, had a major moment among Hollywood stars in 2013 and is hailed as a hairstyle that flatters nearly anyone. Featuring a shoulder-sweeping length, it’s long enough to be worn in a ponytail or bun, but also short enough to create a chic look without hours under the blow dryer. The daring, super-short pixie, on the other hand, appeals to those who want an easy wash-and-go cut. Trying a shorter ‘do can be overwhelming, but several stylists insist that now is the time to try a new look. “Changing your hair can be one of the best ways to liberate yourself and to really feel like a new person,” says Ryan Stone, hairstylist at Ted Gibson Salon in New York City, adding that one shouldn’t fear change because hair always grows back. READ: Want to Try a Pixie Cut? Here's What You Need to Know And how do you know which style is the best one for you? There a few pointers to keep in mind. When it comes to the bob, keep in mind that this is one full-commitment look that should never be requested on a whim. “You should be prepared for a brand new look,” says Zachary Killian, senior stylist at Hollywood-based Hairroin Salon. “I would go as far as taking a trip to a wig store to actually try on a style similar to what you want first. There are also an array of computer apps that allow you to upload your own photo and effortlessly try on different styles to help determine if the look suits you. The more you know, the less likely you are to suffer from a bout of cutter’s remorse.” READ: Short Hairstyles to Flatter All Faces But what if you rather take the plunge for a pixie instead? It’s all about taking note of your face shape, an immediate indicator of how short you should go. “Pixie cuts tend to look best on oval, square, and heart-shaped faces,” says Ryan Richman, stylist at Prive Salon. “Women with heart-shaped faces can pull off shorter pixie cuts as it brings attention to the eyes and away from the long jaw line. Additionally, heart-shaped faces tend to have wide foreheads. Adding some sideswept bangs will help narrow it.” If you just can’t bear going too short, there’s always the safer, equally polished lob, which is one of the reasons why it stills to be on-trend. “It looks great on everyone, whether you pair it with a side part, middle part, bangs, wavy or straight hair, but never curly,” says Eugene Smith, senior stylist at Ted Gibson. “Ask your stylist to keep the ends light and wispy to avoid a pyramid look.” READ: Best Hairstyles For Women Over 40 For some ideas, check out the many celebrity cuts women have been requesting lately:

Blake Lively Goes for ’60s Chic at 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards

One actress decided to take a trip back in time this week. READ: Blake Lively Shares Her Style Secrets For the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards held at Alice Tully Hall at New York City’s Lincoln Center Monday, former "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively decided to go for a sultry ‘60s chic look to celebrate the best in couture. The 26-year-old actress, wearing a shimmery sequined gold dress by Michael Kors, accompanied the designer to the festivities. Along with sparkling hoop earrings and a classic headband to better accent her signature tousled blonde tresses, Lively completed the look with pink suede pumps. While this daring retro look could have easily looked too costumey for the everyday wearer, the wife of fellow actor Ryan Reynolds made it her own, adding modern touches to enhance her personal style. Back in 2013, she told Lucky Magazine that one of her best tricks is knowing what looks good on her body. “I like a waistline, a nip almost right under the boobs, because I want the lines of the clothes to make a journey around my curves, rather than travel straight up my body,” explains the star, who reportedly doesn’t work with a stylist. Lively also suggested making a collection out of your favorite accessories so you’ll always have something to complete your outfit. For the actress, she loves scarves, plastic bangles, cocktail rings, flea market finds, and towering Christian Louboutin heels to elongate her figure.
