Sophisticated diamond-district heist fascinates Britain, leaves police on defensive

A British newspaper has published surveillance-camera images that appear to show thieves robbing a high-security safety deposit facility in London's diamond district.

The methodical heist has fascinated Britain — and left police on the defensive.

The footage published Saturday by the Daily Mirror shows several men, their faces covered with dust masks, entering and leaving the building repeatedly over the Easter weekend.

Police declined to comment on the footage.

Detectives have acknowledged that a burglar alarm at the facility was triggered early on April 3, the start of the holiday weekend, but no one was sent to check on it. The crime was discovered when businesses reopened Tuesday.

Police say the thieves stole the contents of 72 safety deposit boxes, which are used by many local dealers to store jewelry.
