Indian police say suspected rebels stormed a police station in Kashmir and killed a police officer and a civilian in a fierce gun battle near the border between Indian- and Pakistani-controlled parts of the disputed Himalayan region.

Inspector-General Danish Rana said Friday that at least six paramilitary officers are trapped inside the station on the outskirts of Kathua town in the region of Jammu.

He says the militants killed a police sentry and then pushed their way into the station. The civilian died in crossfire as the officers responded.

There are several anti-India groups fighting for Kashmir's independence or merger with neighboring Pakistan. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
