Health authorities in Mexico City say a 5-year-old boy whose mother allegedly gouged out his eyes is expected to live, but has been left completely blind.

The chief prosecutor for the Mexico City suburb where the crime occurred says the boy's mother urged others to help her mutilate her son in order "to prevent an earthquake and save the world."

Mexico state prosecutor Jose Neme says the mother and seven other people are being held pending charges.

Mexico City's Health Department said Friday the child is in intensive care at a hospital in the capital.

Authorities said that adults at the boy's home appeared to have been consuming unspecified drugs when the crime was committed Thursday.
