A primary school teacher has been reprimanded in Japan for asking students to figure out how long it would take to kill 18 children at a rate of three murders per day.
The 45-year-old teacher, whose name was withheld, apologized for giving his 7 and 8-year-old students the odd math problem the read: "There are 18 kids. If we kill three per day, how many days it will take?" in May, the Agence France-Presse reported. A parent complained to the school in July.
"I did it carelessly. I deeply reflect on my conduct," the teacher was quoted as saying by officials.
The school board said it gave the teacher a "strict reprimand" and that it "should not happen again."
"We are very sorry. We are taking measures to prevent a repeat of similar cases," said Kumiko Atsumi, a board official told the AFP.
