Italy: body of German tourist found in Lake Garda

Italian Coast Guard searchers on Monday found the body of one of three German tourists who went missing after they took a sailboat out on Lake Garda a few hours before a storm developed, authorities said.

Coast Guard Cmdr. Cosimo Nicastro said there were no immediate details about the identity, sex or age of the victim, whose body was found near the overturned boat on Monday.

The three went out sailing at lunchtime on Sunday before a storm developed, bringing strong winds and leaving the chilly water choppy. Authorities were alerted that they were missing after they didn't return Sunday evening to the campground near the lake where they were staying, Nicastro said.

Nicastro said no one was aboard the boat when it was spotted during a helicopter and motorboat search, which was continuing. The weather had improved, but because the lake water temperature was as low as 10C (50F), chances of survival in it for any prolonged time were dim, he said.

The sailboat belonged to one of the tourists, Nicastro said.
