A driver for the country's top health official is in deep trouble after smashing up a government car, fleeing the scene and leaving behind a stash of hashish.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says the man crashed Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman's Audi in a one-car accident early Tuesday.

Rosenfeld says the man fled from the scene but called police, who arrived to find leftover hashish in the vehicle. The driver was later arrested.

Israel does not have a health minister, leaving Litzman in charge of the country's public health system.

The ministry says the driver was one of several used by Litzman and was on personal business at the time. It says the incident remains under investigation.
