Haiti PM: 6 ex-election officials arrested

The office of Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe says authorities have arrested six former election officials for alleged involvement in misappropriating state property.

Identities of the former Provisional Electoral Council officials have not been released. They are accused of stealing property that includes 460 laptops, 160 photovoltaic panels and 207 memory cards.

Haitian President Michel Martelly in December fired members of the nine-person electoral council so he could begin the process of naming members of a new agency who will pick a date an election. The ousted officials were ordered to return government property they still had.

The government is expected to organize legislative elections for one-third of the Senate along with mayoral posts, but it's unclear when the vote will be held.

The arrests happened Tuesday.
