Lebanese security officials say an explosion has struck a south Beirut neighborhood.

The officials say the blast occurred Wednesday morning in the suburb of Beir Hassan. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen TV said the explosion occurred near the Iranian cultural center and the Kuwaiti Embassy.

A wave of bombings linked to the war in neighboring Syria has struck Lebanon over the past few months, killing and wounding scores of people.

The blast is the latest to hit a predominantly Shiite area.
