BEIJING – Chinese authorities say 680 overseas fugitives accused of graft, fraud or other economic crimes have been extradited or have returned home on their own.
The Ministry of Public Security said Thursday that 290 people were captured and 390 others turned themselves in during the six-month campaign dubbed Fox Hunt.
The ministry launched the operation in July as part of a widening anti-graft campaign. A large number of government officials and business executives have fled overseas with ill-gained wealth, and Beijing wants to deter that.
The ministry says 208 of the fugitives are accused of economic crimes involving more than 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) and 117 had lived overseas for more than a decade.
