Two brothers of the first Latino to be elected to the City Council of Compton, California, were shot late Monday outside the family’s home in East Los Angeles. One was fatally wounded.

According to Dep. Mike Barraza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting was gang-related.

While the Sheriff’s Department did not name the two victims, council member Isaac Galvan identified them on Facebook as two of his brothers, Larry and Dennis Galvan.

The two men were walking down the street in front of their mother’s home when a man approached and opened fire, according to the Los Angeles Times. Larry, 27, was hit several times in the chest, while Dennis was shot in the foot.

The gunman then jumped into a waiting SUV, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The brothers were taken to a nearby hospital, where Larry was declared dead.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, Isaac posted to his Facebook page an emotional message about the attack, along with a photo of his brothers with Kendrick Lamar.

Isaac wrote, “My little brothers were both victims of a senseless drive-by shooting in front of my mother’s house. I'm glad my little brother Dennis was able to go home today, only being shot in his foot. I'm sad to say my other little brother, Larry, did not make it. He was shot multiple times in the chest and died of cardiac arrest.”

He added that Larry “leaves behind 3 brothers, a mother, many friends and 3 beautiful children – who through their lives, his memory will live on.”

The council member went on to write in his post, “I will always love and miss my brother, Larry. Now it's my job to make sure that his death is not in vain and to make sure that I'm there and a good example to his children.”
