OAXACA, Mexico – Authorities in southern Mexico have found the bodies of 11 people in an indigenous community that has been troubled by violence and land disputes.
Oaxaca state prosecutor Joaquin Carrillo Ruiz says that 10 burned bodies were found inside an SUV and another body with a gunshot to the head was found a few meters from the vehicle.
He said Saturday that there were three minors among the dead and that none had been identified yet.
The prosecutor did not provide a motive for the killings. The community of San Juan Mixtepec in Oaxaca has a high poverty rate and a history of land conflicts with a neighboring community.
In March, San Juan Mixtepec's mayor, Feliciano Martinez, and a municipal police officer were killed by gunmen in an ambush.
