Philippine officials say a tropical storm that roughed up seas and dumped torrents of monsoon rains has left one person dead and caused barges to smash into dozens of shanties along Manila Bay.

Benito Ramos of the Office of Civil Defense says a man drowned in a swollen river in central Antique province Sunday. Two of three wayward barges from a nearby pier rammed into a row of wooden shanties on stilts in Manila's Tondo slum district early Monday. They destroyed the shanties but caused no injuries.

Coast guard officer Noli Casiano says residents fled from the strong wind and waves before the two empty barges hit their shanties.

Ramos says four fishermen were reported missing in Occidental Mindoro province, south of Manila.
