Chelsea announced Monday that John Terry's knee injury is not as severe as initially anticipated, revealing that the captain will be out of action for weeks and not months.

Terry underwent a scan that revealed "no significant damage" to his right knee. The defender had to be taken out of Sunday's match against Liverpool on a stretcher.

"Today's MRI scans on John Terry's right knee thankfully show no significant damage to the cruciate ligaments," the club said in a statement on Monday. "Chelsea Football Club's medical team will conduct further tests over the next two or three days once the swelling has subsided to determine how long John will be out, but it will be a matter of weeks not months."

Terry will miss Chelsea's crucial Champions League clash at Juventus, as well as league matches against West Bromwich and Manchester City. The club hopes to have him back in time for its FIFA Club World Cup trip to Japan early next month.
