Starting quarterback Greg McGhee and linebacker Keith Pough may be among the Howard University players declared ineligible to participate in season-opening games.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that up to 14 players have been declared ineligible by the NCAA for one to three games, the result of the sanctioning body's continuing investigation into improper use of textbook allowances by Howard student-athletes.

The names or the exact number of the players who will miss time were not immediately made available by the school or the NCAA, but head coach Gary Harrell said the list of ineligible players could include McGhee, the 2011 Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference rookie of the year, and Pough, the conference's preseason defensive player of the year and a nominee for the Buck Buchanan Award.

Howard's first three games are against Morehouse on Sept. 1 at RFK Stadium; at Rutgers on Sept. 8; and at Norfolk State on Sept. 15.

After a bye, the Bison play their fourth game on Sept. 29 against Savanannah State.
