Before the skies opened up, Hungarian veteran Melinda Czink upset second- seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Czink converted all five of her break points.

In other action involving seeds, No. 4 Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa overcame Venezuelan qualifier Adriana Perez 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 and Romanian Monica Niculescu drove out No. 6 Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 on the hardcourts at Federacao Catarinense de Tenis.

Other Day-2 winners were Croatian qualifier Tereza Mrdeza, Spanish qualifier Beatriz Garcia Vidagany and Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.
