SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Brad Penny, Jason Motte and Ryan Franklin combined on a nine-hit shutout, Albert Pujols hit his team-leading seventh home run and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 2-0 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep.

Penny (3-0) gave up eight hits over 7 2-3 innings, striking out two with no walks while outpitching former teammate Matt Cain. The Cardinals' right-hander, who played for San Francisco in 2009, didn't allow a runner past second base while lowering his ERA to 0.94.

Pujols finished with three hits for the 137th time in his career and improved to 8 for 12 lifetime against Cain (0-1).
