The San Diego Padres have purchased the contract of infielder-outfielder Jesus Guzman from Triple-A Tucson.

He takes the roster spot of infielder Jorge Cantu, who was designated for assignment after Wednesday night's loss to Colorado.

Guzman was hitting .332 with eight home runs and 57 RBIs at Tucson. He made his major league debut for the San Francisco Giants in 2009.

Cantu hit just .194 with three homers and 16 RBIs.
